Recycle Old Computer

It is no secret that our junkyards and landfills are quickly reaching their capacity to safely and hygienically keep the garbage of civilization out of sight and out of mind. While there are already many governments, both local and national, that are tackling this problem head on, there is another factor that has come into play and that can have a significant effect on our trash problem. As technology keeps surging forwards, the remnants of the bygone technology is left behind and gets disposed of. These old computers and other systems are taking up space in landfills that can be used for other junk. People need to be informed about their choice to recycle old computers.

But what do they mean when they say that you can recycle old computers? The first idea that most people think of is probably the recycling plant where the plastics, glass, and paper is separated and then recycled. While some parts of a computer can go through this process, for the most part it is a little hard to traditionally recycle old computers. Since many computers are made up of a combination of plastic, glass, and other materials, traditional recycling - while possible - is quite expensive and therefore only certain parts can be recycled with any success. Instead there is a movement to finding new uses for old computers.

Finding a new use for old computers is one part of the plan to recycle old computers. While the price of computers has come down considerably in the past few decades there are still places and people that cannot easily afford a personal computer. With basic computer literacy becoming ever more important to find a job, children must be exposed to this technology from an early age so they can become acquainted with what a computer is and how it works. For poorer schools, selling or even donating old computers can help them to reach their students more effectively. Even donating the tons of old computers to countries that have a hard time gaining access to the technology in an affordable way is a more viable option than just dumping an old personal computer in the dump.

A method to recycle old computers that is less altruistic and not as common is selling old computers for parts. There are many people that have an intense interest in computers and companies that like to buy up old parts to create affordable low-end machines for users with limited needs. In this way old monitors, motherboards, hard drives, and just about any other piece of computer hardware can be reused in new personal computers for people to use. Considering the speed at which technology changes, however, this is not an ideal option.

But at leas there are options available to recycle old computers. There is no reason to just throw out your old computer when you are done with it. Chances are that there is someone that can find some use for it - all you have to do is find a way to make it work.
